In collaboration with the Central Environmental Authority and the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, the All Island Short Video Competition recently took place, focusing on the theme “Let’s contribute to reducing climate change through responsible waste management.” This initiative was part of Nestlé Lanka’s broader commitment to inspire positive behavioral changes regarding waste disposal among the youth of Sri Lanka, coinciding with the celebration of World Environment Day.
A ceremony to honor the winners was held on June 25, 2026, at the Central Environmental Authority. Distinguished attendees included Honourable Anton Jayakodi, Deputy Minister of Environment; Professor Tilak Hewawasam, Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority; Ms. Asha De Silva, Deputy Director of Education for Agriculture and Environment; and Ruwan Welikala, Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications at Nestlé Lanka.
Deputy Minister Anton Jayakodi remarked, “The short video competition featured both school and open categories. It serves as a commendable effort to raise environmental awareness. Programs like this are crucial for fostering a positive attitude toward environmental protection and ensuring that we preserve our planet for future generations.”
Professor Tilak Hewawasam expressed his views on the initiative, stating, “In a time when climate action is critical, this project provides an excellent platform for engaging and empowering the youth of Sri Lanka. By harnessing their creativity, we aim to promote awareness about responsible waste disposal and cultivate a generation that prioritizes sustainability. We are excited to collaborate with Nestlé Lanka on this important initiative.”
Ruwan Welikala added, “Responsible waste disposal is essential for enhancing waste segregation and collection systems while instilling positive habits from a young age. We are pleased to have supported the All Island Short Video Competition, which allowed young individuals to express their creativity while promoting awareness and action regarding responsible waste management. As Nestlé Lanka celebrates its 120th anniversary in Sri Lanka, initiatives like this exemplify our ongoing dedication to creating shared value for communities and advancing a circular economy through education and awareness. The enthusiasm and creativity shown by participants instill confidence in the next generation’s ability to contribute to a sustainable future for Sri Lanka. The submissions were assessed by a distinguished panel of judges, which included Professor Patrick Ratnayake, Senior Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya; Mr. Anuradha Dewapriya, a Senior Environmental Journalist; and Mr. Mahesh Chathuranga, a Senior Photographer.
The winners of the competition are as follows:
- 1st place (School Individual Category) – Binadi Jihansa Basnayake, Thelijjawila Central College
- 2nd place (School Individual Category) – U.J. Sayuni Tharumindi, Thelijjawila Central College
- 3rd place (School Group Category) – Thelijjawila Central College – J.V. Kulansa Sanuli, K.M. Thenuki Thehasna, W.P. Thenuri Thimasha, Thanusha Dulmina, M.K. Nadija Tashen
