The introduction of cross-border payment solutions is anticipated to significantly enable Sri Lankan small enterprises, start-ups, and other businesses to engage more actively in global trade. Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya expressed her support for this initiative during a launch event, highlighting the interconnectedness of the SME sector, online services, e-commerce, and the digital economy. She noted that this sector is poised for substantial growth.

According to estimates, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises contribute around 52% to Sri Lanka’s GDP, underscoring the critical need to enhance global market access for this segment. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of integrating online services and payments into a secure and reliable framework. Given the rising global concerns regarding scams and insecure transactions, establishing a trusted and accountable platform is essential for future progress.

Representatives from the involved financial institutions underscored the significance of these collaborations in fortifying Sri Lanka’s digital financial landscape, ensuring compliant cross-border payment transactions, and improving customer access to international payment systems.
