Pelwatte Dairy Industries Limited has inaugurated its cutting-edge Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at the Buttala manufacturing site, representing a pivotal advancement in the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility, adherence to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria, and ethical dairy processing.
This ETP stands as the largest of its kind within the dairy processing sector in Sri Lanka, highlighting Pelwatte Dairy’s dedication to aligning its operations with international environmental standards and enhancing its competitiveness in global markets.
Strategic Commitment to ESG and Responsible Growth
The establishment of this facility reflects a proactive and strategic initiative by the Board of Directors to incorporate ESG principles into the core functions of the company. As Pelwatte Dairy expands its processing capabilities and broadens its export reach, maintaining environmental compliance has become a fundamental aspect of its sustainable development goals.
The ETP has been specifically designed to comply with the stringent environmental regulations prevalent in Western, European, and Far Eastern markets, where adherence to wastewater discharge standards, environmental reporting, and sustainable practices is crucial for market access.
Future-Proofed Design for Scalable Growth
The facility boasts a baseline treatment capacity of 250 cubic meters per day, with the engineered capability to manage peak flows of up to 325 cubic meters. This additional 30% capacity is intended to support future increases in processing volumes.
This forward-thinking design ensures that Pelwatte Dairy can sustain its environmental performance even during periods of high production, reinforcing the company’s commitment to long-term compliance, operational resilience, and responsible growth.
Advanced Technology Supporting Global Compliance
The ETP employs sophisticated treatment technologies, including:
- Integrated Dissolved Air Flotation (IDAF)
- Anaerobic and Enhanced Sequential Batch Reactor (AnSBR/eSBR) systems
- Dedicated Clean-in-Place (CIP) wastewater management
- Real-time automated process monitoring
- Screw press sludge dewatering
These advanced systems ensure high treatment efficiency and compliance with vital environmental metrics such as Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and nutrient discharge limitations.
The plant adheres to the stringent discharge standards set by Sri Lanka’s Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and aligns with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) practices, reflecting Pelwatte Dairy’s structured approach to environmental governance and continuous improvement.
Regulatory Engagement and Endorsement
The opening ceremony was graced by notable representatives from the Board of Investment (BOI) Environmental Division and the provincial and district offices of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), symbolizing strong regulatory engagement and support for the environmental benchmarks achieved through this initiative.
Their participation emphasizes Pelwatte Dairy’s proactive collaboration with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with national environmental regulations while aligning with global best practices.
Enhancing Global Credibility of Sri Lankan Dairy
This development further solidifies Pelwatte Dairy’s reputation as a responsible and competitive player in the global dairy market, capable of fulfilling the environmental requirements of prominent international clients and regulatory authorities.
Moreover, this initiative not only boosts the company’s ESG profile but also plays a crucial role in raising the sustainability standards within Sri Lanka’s dairy industry.
Acknowledgements
Pelwatte Dairy expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the project team, operational staff, consultants, regulatory authorities, and partners for their invaluable contributions.
