President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives is scheduled to make an official trip to Sri Lanka from May 3 to May 6, as confirmed by sources familiar with the visit. This trip occurs ten months after Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s visit to the Maldives in July.
According to insiders, Muizzu’s journey is a reciprocal gesture following Dissanayake’s earlier visit. The trip is being conducted at the invitation of President Dissanayake and will include discussions on various topics such as trade, investment, tourism, and the exchange of information.
During President Dissanayake’s visit to the Maldives last July, he signed two significant agreements: the Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement and a Memorandum of Understanding between the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives and the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute of Sri Lanka.
The bilateral relationship between these two island nations in the Indian Ocean has historically been cordial and collaborative, supported by their membership in organizations such as the Commonwealth, SAARC, and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
Trade between the Maldives and Sri Lanka currently stands at approximately USD 40 million annually, predominantly consisting of Sri Lankan exports of apparel, ceramics, and food products. Both nations also benefit from reciprocal tourism, with Maldivian patients often traveling to Colombo for advanced medical care and students seeking higher education opportunities.
Cooperation in defense and security has expanded since 1988, with both countries now engaging in joint naval exercises and sharing intelligence to combat piracy and trafficking.
Politically, the relationship has remained stable despite changes in government in either nation. President Muizzu, who emerged victorious in the 2023 elections with a campaign focused on reducing Indian influence, has shown a tendency to strengthen ties with China, particularly through the Belt and Road Initiative. However, there has been a noticeable decline in anti-Indian sentiment following the election.
