Public Advised to Remain Vigilant Against Online Financial Scams

The public is being urged to exercise caution when purchasing goods online due to a recent increase in financial fraud associated with online transactions.

Reports indicate that fraudsters are utilizing social media platforms like Facebook, Ikman, and WhatsApp to sell mobile phones and other electronic devices at highly attractive prices. The image above illustrates a similar fraudulent incident that was recently reported.

How to Identify Online Scammers

Scammers typically follow a recognizable pattern. They advertise products at prices significantly below the market value, aiming to exploit the buyer’s greed and sense of urgency. Often, they claim there is high demand for the item and pressure potential buyers by asserting that the product will be sold immediately if payment is not made.

Victims are then instructed to make an advance payment, usually between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 20,000, ostensibly to reserve the item. Once the money is deposited into the fraudster’s bank account, they cease communication and block the victim’s contact number.

Preventive Measures to Avoid Falling Victim to Such Frauds

The public is strongly advised against making payments for goods without physically inspecting and collecting the item. Advance payments for online purchases should be avoided in all situations.

It is recommended to use Cash on Delivery services or conduct transactions through direct, hand-to-hand exchanges. When meeting unknown sellers, individuals should choose well-populated and secure public locations and avoid going alone.

Buyers are also encouraged to request a video call to verify that the seller possesses the advertised product. Attention should be paid not only to the item but also to the seller’s identity, as fraudsters often avoid showing their faces.

Additionally, bank account details provided by sellers should be carefully scrutinized. If there is any suspicion regarding the account holder’s name or number, payments should not be made. Scammers frequently use bank accounts opened with third-party identification details.
