Sathis Abeywickrama, the Managing Director of Flexiprint (Pvt) Ltd, was honored with the title of “Flexo Avenger” during the esteemed Flexo Summit Asia 2026, which recently took place in Bengaluru, India. This accolade is awarded to individuals who have significantly contributed to the advancement of Flexographic printing. Abeywickrama was highlighted in the Summit’s session titled “Flexo Avengers: Converters who Changed the Game,” sharing the spotlight with other notable figures in the industry.
Commenting on this prestigious recognition, Sathis Abeywickrama stated, “Receiving the title of Flexo Avenger is a tremendous honor, reflecting our unwavering dedication, innovation, and customer-centric approach throughout our successful journey spanning over forty years. This journey has witnessed numerous significant milestones, beginning from a time when our export sector, particularly the tea industry, had to rely on imported packaging solutions, including tea bag tags and labels.”
Abeywickrama began his career in the printing sector in 1978 and established PrintUSA in 1989. He later founded Flexiprint in 1994 to cater to the growing needs of Sri Lanka’s tea export industry by providing tea bag tags, tea envelopes, tagged pyramid mesh tea bags, and specialized labels. The path to establishing Flexiprint was challenging, as he recognized that conventional flexographic printing methods utilized solvent and dye-based inks, which raised food safety concerns due to their proximity to consumable products. This prompted him to search for safer, eco-friendly alternatives.
He continued, “This led us to adopt water-based inks, positioning Flexiprint as one of the early adopters of this technology for tea packaging in Asia. Our commitment to food safety, quality, and environmental responsibility has since become fundamental to our operations.”
Flexiprint has evolved into a prominent producer of tea bag tags, tea envelopes, tagged pyramid mesh tea bags, and specialty labels, serving a diverse clientele across Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and North America. This progression signifies a vital opportunity for Sri Lanka’s manufacturing sector and has established Flexiprint as a leading manufacturer in the industry.
Sri Lanka has long excelled in sectors such as tea, apparel, and agriculture. However, the next phase of value enhancement lies in cultivating specialized technologies, components, and services that bolster these industries. The evolution of Flexiprint serves as a testament to how reliance on imports can transform into an opportunity for enhancing domestic industrial capabilities and fostering export growth.
