SEC Highlights 196% Increase in Singapore Investments After Strategic Investor Forum

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Sri Lanka has published findings that indicate a notable rise in foreign investments, attributed to its strategic outreach initiatives aimed at engaging with international markets.

As detailed in the SEC’s performance overview presented at the Invest Sri Lanka Forum on August 12, 2025, foreign equity investments from Singaporean investors surged from Rs. 2.6 billion in the year leading up to the forum to Rs. 7.7 billion in the year following the event. This marks an impressive increase of 196% in capital inflow from Singapore.

While these targeted outcomes underline the effectiveness of international marketing efforts, overall foreign involvement in Sri Lanka’s capital market is gradually improving. Currently, foreign investors represent only 9% of the total turnover in the stock market. Although this shows an increase from the 6% recorded in 2025, it is still considerably lower than the 40% foreign participation rate seen prior to the nation’s economic crisis.

Attracting foreign capital is deemed crucial for the expansion and fortification of the local capital market. However, the SEC highlights that the transition from outreach to active trading is a gradual process. Investors typically do not allocate funds immediately after attending promotional events; rather, they engage in a thorough six-to-twelve-month period of independent research, meetings with local businesses, risk assessments, and due diligence.

To facilitate this extensive decision-making timeline, the SEC’s developmental role extends beyond regulatory functions to include proactive investor education. The Invest Sri Lanka Forums are structured as collaborative initiatives, bringing together the SEC, the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), stockbrokers, fund managers, listed companies, and other significant market players to present a cohesive investment proposition to global audiences.

The SEC noted that these joint outreach efforts are essential in aiding international investors to make well-informed decisions, emphasizing that the statistics following the Singapore forum clearly demonstrate that continuous engagement produces tangible outcomes.
