Sri Lanka is set to undertake repairs of street lighting along segments of the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway, with an estimated expenditure of 1.0985 billion rupees, as announced by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.
Currently, approximately 85 percent of the expressway’s lighting is inoperative, primarily due to incidents of vandalism and theft, leaving significant areas of the roadway in complete darkness.
In light of the overall expenses required to illuminate the entire expressway, the initial phase of the project will focus on lighting specific interchanges, including Peliyagoda, Kerawalapitiya, Seeduwa, and Ja Ela. Additionally, sections of the freeway from the New Kelani Bridge to the Peliyagoda Fish Market, as well as from Seeduwa to Bandaranaike International Airport, will be addressed first, according to Jayatissa’s statements to the media.
The proposal to enhance and restore the lighting system on these particular sections has received cabinet approval and will be executed in two phases by contractors in accordance with established procurement procedures. (Colombo/Jun2/2026)
