FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – Sri Lanka and Belgium have successfully concluded their inaugural political consultations in Brussels this week, marking a significant step towards a revitalized partnership, according to Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry.

The discussions were led by Sugeeshwara Gunaratna, Director-General for the Europe and North American region, alongside his Belgian counterpart, Birgit Stevens. These high-level talks have revitalized an agreement initially conceptualized in 2017.

Both nations conducted a thorough review of their bilateral relations, focusing on areas such as political engagement, high-level visits, trade, investment, and tourism. Additional topics included defense and maritime security cooperation, scientific and cultural cooperation, disaster prevention and climate resilience, green transition, and collaboration within multilateral forums.

Sri Lanka expressed a strong interest in fortifying economic ties, highlighting trade, tourism, and investment opportunities in sectors like green energy, pharmaceuticals, ICTs, ports, and logistics.

The discussions also covered ongoing cooperation within the European Union (EU), including Sri Lanka’s participation in the EU GSP+ scheme, debt restructuring, and reforms guided by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) aimed at economic recovery.

Belgium acknowledged Sri Lanka’s efforts towards economic recovery and institutional reforms, while Sri Lanka conveyed its gratitude for Belgium’s support within the EU and other international platforms, particularly seeking Belgian assistance in the recovery phase following Cyclone Ditwah.

Sri Lanka emphasized the importance of constructive engagement and ongoing progress, providing updates on efforts to enhance good governance, national reconciliation, and the upholding of the rule of law.

The discussions also encompassed regional and global developments, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to multilateralism, the respect for the UN Charter, and international law.
