Sri Lanka and Italy Renew Bilateral Agreement on Mutual Recognition of Driving Licences

The Governments of Sri Lanka and Italy have officially renewed their Bilateral Agreement on the Mutual Recognition of Driving Licences, following a signing ceremony held yesterday (12) in Rome.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Italy, Satya Rodrigo, signed on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government, while Italy was represented by Deputy Minister and Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism announced.

The renewed agreement marks the conclusion of negotiations between transport authorities of both countries, reinstating an arrangement that lapsed in 2021. Originally introduced in 2011 and renewed again in 2016, the agreement enables individuals with permanent residency in either country to convert their valid national driving licence without facing fresh written or practical tests.

Nationals who have resided in the host country for at least six years are eligible for licence conversion under the agreement. The ministry noted that this provision has been particularly beneficial for the large Sri Lankan community in Italy, enhancing employment opportunities and supporting their role as a productive expatriate workforce.

The renewed agreement will remain in effect for five years. It will come into force 60 days after ratification by both governments, at which point an official joint announcement will be issued.
