FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – Sri Lanka and Türkiye engaged in discussions regarding the advancement of their defense and security collaboration during a recent meeting between senior officials from both nations in Ankara.
The second round of political consultations took place on Tuesday (May 5) at Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara.
In a statement, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry emphasized the significance of maintaining ongoing political dialogue to assess progress and explore new cooperation opportunities, building on the robust historical ties between the two countries.
Throughout the consultations, the delegations from both nations participated in extensive and future-oriented discussions that encompassed a broad range of topics. These included political relations, trade and economic partnerships, defense collaboration, connectivity, maritime issues, education, science and technology, as well as regional and multilateral matters.
The delegations also investigated potential opportunities for investment and joint ventures, particularly in key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, tourism, logistics, and technology.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the discussions highlighted the steady advancement in defense and security cooperation, with both parties reaffirming their dedication to enhancing institutional connections and capacity-building initiatives.
The meeting was co-chaired by Sugeeshwara Gunaratna, the Director General of the Europe and North America Division within Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ambassador Cihad Erginay, the Director General for South Asia at Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Further discussions centered on improving connectivity and maritime cooperation, including the utilization of existing direct air services between Istanbul and Colombo and potential collaboration in maritime services and the blue economy.
Both delegations acknowledged the importance of fostering cooperation in higher education, vocational training, and scientific research, with an emphasis on promptly finalizing outstanding bilateral agreements.
They also exchanged perspectives on regional and global developments, focusing on issues in West Asia, South Asia, and the Indian Ocean region, and reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate closely within the United Nations and other multilateral platforms on matters of shared interest.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to the principles outlined in the UN Charter, as well as adherence to international law and multilateral cooperation.
The Sri Lankan delegation included Niluka Kadurugamuwa, the Ambassador to Türkiye, along with Minister Nilusha Dilmini and First Secretary for Commercial Affairs Dilanga Hettiarachchi. (Colombo/May 7, 2026)
