According to a recent announcement from the government information department, Sri Lanka is contemplating the conversion of tourist areas into “Zero Emission” zones in the future.
The government has already conducted preliminary assessments and identified potential opportunities for this initiative, which aims to rejuvenate the green tourism sector in the country.
As part of this initiative, there are discussions regarding the promotion of environmentally friendly electric vehicles (EVs) within these tourist areas.
The objective is to establish these distinctive tourist regions as “Zero Emission” zones by leveraging various investments and implementing effective programs.
Currently, Sri Lanka imposes a tax on imported electric vehicles that ranges between 100 percent and over 160 percent of their cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) value, depending on the power of the vehicle’s motor. (Colombo/Jun5/2026)
