FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The cabinet of Sri Lanka has given the green light to a proposal for the creation of a state-owned enterprise tasked with the management, operation, and development of the island’s multimodal transportation hubs, as announced by government spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa.
This new organization, which will be established in accordance with the Public Finance Management Act, No. 44 of 2024, will function as a Treasury Limited (Public) Company under the direct oversight of the Ministry of Transport. Its responsibilities will encompass the operation, administration, standardization, business development, and coordination of national policies related to both existing and future transport hubs.
Jayatissa emphasized that it is deemed suitable to establish a fully government-controlled Treasury Limited (Public) Company to oversee the management of multimodal transport facilities. Currently, Sri Lanka operates two multimodal transport hubs located in Makumbura and Kadawatha, while construction is underway for two additional hubs in Anuradhapura (South) and Kandy.
The government views these hubs as essential for facilitating smooth transitions and coordination between various modes of transport, including buses, trains, and taxis. “A key goal for the government is to enhance the efficiency, integration, and user-friendliness of both urban and inter-urban passenger transport systems in Sri Lanka,” Jayatissa noted.
