Sri Lanka Forms Committee to Strategically Advance Energy Economy Development

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved the establishment of a new committee aimed at the development of the energy economy, in response to a slowdown in investment within that sector, according to Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

“The energy economy has been identified as a priority sector, but there has been a slowdown in investment in that sector due to the weaknesses in integration between the main economic sectors,” Jayatissa stated during a press briefing.

He further emphasized that the Government acknowledges the importance of exploring and implementing innovative and forward-looking approaches to ensure sustainable growth in the national economy.

The expert committee will be chaired by Hans Wijesuriya, a former telecommunications head and current presidential advisor. It will also include Duminda Hulangamuwa, another presidential advisor who previously served as an advisor to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The committee will consist of several ministry secretaries who will develop a framework for advancing the energy economy in a manner that aligns with national policies, strategies, and delivery frameworks, Jayatissa added. (Colombo/Mar24/2026)
