Sri Lanka has established a committee to oversee the restructuring of SriLankan Airlines, which will collaborate with the International Finance Corporation, serving as the transaction advisor for the airline’s divestiture, according to a statement from the Department of Government Information.
The government has recognized the urgent need to undertake a thorough strategic assessment of SriLankan Airlines, considering the larger macroeconomic context. The committee will engage in a detailed review and assessment, offering recommendations on potential restructuring models and analyzing the best strategic options that align with government goals.
The primary aim of this initiative is to create a national airline that is financially viable and operationally efficient, while also reducing the long-term financial obligations of the government.
Leading the committee is Hans Wijesuriya, a former telecommunications executive and current presidential advisor. Other members include Duminda Hulangamuwa, Deshal de Mel, Dumith Fernando, a representative from the Ministry of Finance, a representative from the Ministry of Transport or the Civil Aviation Authority, the chairman of SriLankan Airlines, as well as legal and aviation experts.
The committee will also be responsible for overseeing, advising, and supporting the strategy and implementation plan chosen by the government, ensuring effective management throughout the restructuring process. (Colombo/Jun13/2026)
