FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has given the green light to a plan that involves investing equity in Lanka Metro Transit (Private) Limited. An allocation of 800 million rupees is set for this year, complemented by an additional 267.5 million rupees earmarked for operations in 2027.
According to Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, these funds will facilitate infrastructure enhancements, which include the establishment of a central workshop in Ekala, as well as the development of modern bus depots located in Talangama, Kadawatha, Ratmalana, and Homagama. Additionally, improvements will be made to internal roads and parking facilities.
Lanka Metro Transit was established on October 3, 2025, in accordance with the Companies Act No. 07 of 2007. The company initially rolled out urban transit pilot operations in Colombo with a fleet of 10 low-floor buses. Plans are in place to introduce an additional 112 low-floor buses by September.
In response to concerns regarding the expansion of the public sector and the possibility of privatization, Jayatissa emphasized that the intent of the new company is to enhance the existing transport frameworks rather than replace them. “There will be no detrimental impact on the SLTB. Our objective is to fortify the SLTB to improve its efficiency,” he stated.
Jayatissa further mentioned that private transport operators will continue to coexist with state-run initiatives to cater to the needs of commuters. “This will not pose a challenge for the private sector; they are encouraged to provide competitive services,” he noted.
He underscored the importance of reducing traffic congestion by promoting a shift from reliance on private vehicles. “The most effective strategy identified to alleviate urban traffic issues is to enhance public transportation — we should not encourage everyone to drive their own cars into urban areas,” he explained, adding that park-and-ride facilities are being developed to assist commuters.
