Sri Lanka Insurance Association Unveils Innovative Digital Card Initiative

The Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL) has introduced a new E-Motor Insurance Digital Card while also donating 500 tablets to the Police. This initiative aims to modernize motor insurance and enhance digital public services within the country.

Alongside its 13 General Insurance member companies, the IASL provided these tablets to bolster the capabilities of the Police and assist in the implementation of the new Accident Management System. “By introducing the E-Motor Card and supporting the Police Department with essential technology, we strengthened the connection between insurers, regulators, and law enforcement,” stated IASL President Lasitha Wimalarathna.

The tablets are anticipated to be instrumental in enabling police officers to digitally record accident data in real-time. This will reduce reliance on manual documentation, thereby improving the accuracy and speed of accident reporting.

The E-Motor Card, accessible via mobile devices, is designed to replace the physical motor insurance card. It offers motorists a secure, tamper-resistant, and easily verifiable form of insurance documentation. This digital transition is expected to eliminate issues related to misplaced, forged, or damaged physical cards and provide an efficient tool for roadside verification.

“The tablets donated by the 13 general insurers further supported this initiative by equipping police officers with the technology required to check and validate digital motor insurance details on the spot,” the IASL noted.

IRCSL Chairman W A R De Mel commented, “The digitalization of motor insurance is a major step forward for consumer protection and regulatory oversight. The E-Motor Card and the upcoming National Insurance Verification System will ensure greater transparency, reduce fraud, and give motorists confidence in the integrity of their insurance coverage.”

The IASL stated that a National Insurance Verification System is set to become operational by March 2026. This system will allow the public to verify their motor insurance status via a single, simplified code—2252—accessible through USSD, SMS, or IVR call.
