Indian travellers are shifting their preferences for winter holidays, with Sri Lanka emerging as the fastest-growing destination this season, according to a report by Atlys.

The report indicates that interest in Sri Lanka has increased five-fold compared to winter 2024. South Africa and Oman have also experienced nearly three-fold growth in popularity among Indian tourists.

According to Atlys, the trend reflects a growing desire for destinations that are easily accessible, affordable, and provide unique cultural or outdoor experiences. Sri Lanka’s surge is attributed to its attractive beaches, close proximity to India, and overall value for travellers. South Africa and Oman are also drawing significant demand, as travellers seek out nature-based experiences and warm-weather escapes during the winter months.

Other destinations demonstrating substantial growth include Georgia, with a 2.1 times increase, followed by Uzbekistan at 1.97 times and Morocco at 1.87 times. Hong Kong saw a 1.88 times rise, while Japan experienced a 1.79 times increase, fuelled by interest in winter landscapes and seasonal events.

“These destinations represent those that have grown the most this winter versus last winter on Atlys’ platform,” the company stated. It also noted that established destinations such as the UAE, the UK, the Schengen region, and the US continue to maintain steady interest from Indian travellers.

Santosh Hegde, Head of Marketing at Atlys, commented on the changing landscape: “We’re seeing a fascinating shift in winter travel behaviour this year. Travellers are discovering destinations that offer depth, diversity, and convenience: whether that’s Sri Lanka for a quick coastal break or Georgia and Uzbekistan for culture and adventure. The growth we’re observing isn’t about replacing classic favourites; it’s about widening the map. Indians are more open than ever to exploring places that weren’t traditionally on their radar.”

The report also highlights that Indian travellers are approaching winter travel in 2025 with greater confidence and curiosity. Improved visa processes and enhanced global mobility are making it easier for Indians to explore new international destinations in addition to their traditional favourites during the winter season.
