A Sri Lankan Commission has announced an extension of the deadline for public submissions regarding allegations of corruption and fraud within the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) from 2010 to 2025. This announcement comes amidst ongoing efforts by the ruling party to solidify its authority, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).
Although the CMC is under the control of the ruling National People’s Power (NPP), the opposition coalition holds the majority. The NPP encountered difficulties establishing the council after the previous year’s local government elections, as well as during the appointment of the Mayor. Additionally, the ruling party initially lost the 2026 budget vote, which they later secured on a second attempt.
In January, a Presidential Commission of Inquiry was established to investigate alleged irregularities at the CMC, inviting public complaints and information pertaining to the period from 2010 to 2025. Originally, the deadline for submissions was set for February 23. However, the PMD has now extended this deadline to March 16, 2026.
Submissions can be made in Sinhala, Tamil, or English and should be addressed to the Secretary of the Commission at “No. 152, Galle Road, Colombo 03.” The PMD’s statement specifies that all submissions must include the complainant’s name, address, contact telephone number, and either their National Identity Card number or passport number. Individuals wishing to keep their identities confidential may request anonymity.
The Presidential Commission is tasked with investigating various alleged offenses, including corruption, fraud, criminal breach of trust, abuse or misuse of power, as well as the misuse of government resources and privileges. The Commission will also examine unlawful recruitments and appointments, violations of procurement guidelines, and irregularities related to the leasing or renting of movable and immovable properties. Furthermore, it will scrutinize legal actions and settlements conducted outside due process, along with any significant losses or damages caused to State assets or revenue as a result of such actions.
