FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The cabinet of ministers in Sri Lanka has sanctioned a plan to acquire 600 deluxe buses at a cost of 14.4 billion rupees, as announced by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.
The national budget has earmarked 14,400 million rupees for the Sri Lanka Transport Board to procure 600 new standard buses, each designed to accommodate 49 to 54 passengers. However, following the introduction of the Road Safety Plan for 2025-2026, the specifications for buses intended for intercity and long-distance travel have been revised.
Minister Jayatissa noted, “Based on these updated specifications, it has become essential to utilize deluxe model (air-conditioned) buses for intercity and long-distance transportation.” Consequently, the cabinet has approved the acquisition of these more comfortable deluxe buses in place of the initially planned standard models, for which funds have already been allocated.
