Sri Lanka Police Enhances Officer Training for Effective Handling of Sensitive SGBV Cases

ECONMYNEXT – The National Police Academy in Katana has recently concluded the third cohort of its Diploma in Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). This program trained 56 Officers-in-Charge (OIC) who oversee Women and Children’s Desks throughout Sri Lanka, focusing on delivering gender-sensitive and survivor-focused responses.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka, which spearheads this initiative, emphasized that this diploma is more than just a training course; it represents a pivotal advancement in policing methodologies. The program is designed to integrate trauma-informed, evidence-based, and accountable practices to combat violence against women and girls across the country.

Spanning 16 weeks, this comprehensive program includes academic coursework, hands-on training, and an assessment component, aimed at preparing officers to respond effectively and sensitively to cases of SGBV, according to the UNDP.
