Sri Lanka Reignites South Korean-Funded ICT Education Initiative

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to restart a project for establishing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub stations for education, as announced by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

The project is funded through a loan from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of the Korea EXIM Bank, supplemented by funds from the Sri Lankan government.

The initiative involves the construction of a national level e-Learning Center and two provincial ICT centers located in the Southern and Eastern Provinces.

Originally approved on June 5, 2018, the project is designed to enhance ICT education and promote the use of technology within schools. The initiative aims to create a systematic e-learning methodology that covers three key sectors: general education, higher education, and vocational education, according to Jayatissa.

Although formal agreements for the project were reached in November 2019, implementation did not proceed as scheduled. The current revival comes after a re-review of the project by an expert committee.
