Sri Lanka is gearing up for a significant increase in tourist activity with the upcoming Derana Digital Colombo International Kite Festival 2026, which will feature 80 international kite flyers from 30 different nations, alongside more than 1,500 local participants.
This year, the festival has transformed from a one-day event into an engaging week-long cultural and educational experience. Attendees can look forward to kite-making workshops, a parade of vintage vehicles, evening kite exhibitions, and various cultural outings.
The event is organized in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, the Sri Lanka Police, and the Colombo Municipal Council, and has seen a 30 percent rise in international participation compared to previous years.
“An international kite festival not only boosts tourism and cultural exchange but also fosters friendship among nations, bringing together diverse peoples to share the skies over beautiful Sri Lanka,” stated Samoorjit Spaulding, a Thai kite educator participating in the festival.
In preparation for the main festival weekend, organizers have held kite-building and flying workshops for over 630 children aged 8 to 15, led by skilled kite flyers from Australia, France, and China.
The event schedule includes a variety of activities throughout Colombo:
- Thursday: A welcoming ceremony for international delegates.
- Friday: An official press conference featuring both local and international media.
- Saturday (9:30 AM – 12:00 PM): A vibrant vehicle parade showcasing nearly 200 classic and vintage cars, accompanied by international kite flyers, commencing at Galle Face Green and traversing key Colombo thoroughfares to Port City.
- Saturday Evening: A special kite-flying event at Port City Colombo for diplomats and media representatives.
- Sunday (1:00 PM – 6:30 PM): The main festival at Galle Face Green, where the skies will be adorned with thousands of kites.
- Sunday (6:30 PM – 7:30 PM): Sri Lanka’s inaugural Night Kite Festival, showcasing illuminated kites against the evening backdrop.
- Sunday (7:30 PM – Midnight): A grand concert featuring popular Sri Lankan artists performing with the Avatar Band, alongside the Derana Colombo Food Festival located opposite Galle Face Green.
This festival has become an international platform to showcase Sri Lanka’s tourism potential and its rich cultural heritage.
“As kites soar above Colombo, they will send a message to the world that Sri Lanka is open and ready to welcome visitors from all corners of the globe,” remarked Madhawa Madawala, Chief Operating Officer of Derana Media Network.
The Sri Lanka Police have announced comprehensive security and traffic management measures, deploying 1,000 officers, with 300 focused on traffic control and 200 in plainclothes. SSP F U Wootler emphasized that designated parade routes and parking facilities have been established throughout the city.
“In addition, 300 police personnel will ensure effective traffic management, while 700 officers will oversee security measures,” Wootler added.
Corporate partner Unilever Sri Lanka expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Children will cherish this experience, where international delegates and local talents unite to bring this art form to our country.”
This year’s festival will embrace a special cultural theme inspired by the Kandy Esala Perahera, allowing international participants to visit the Sri Dalada Maligawa and gain insight into Sri Lanka’s religious heritage. (Colombo/August 07/2026)
