The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) is set to conduct a promotional campaign in Kurunegala on February 20 and 21, 2026, aimed at increasing awareness of digital payments among the business community and the general public. Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of CBSL, along with other senior officials, will be participating in the event.
Under the theme “Shaping the Future through Digital Payments,” CBSL initiated a nationwide digital payments promotion campaign in 2025 in collaboration with financial institutions and other key stakeholders. This program had previously been conducted in Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, and Dambulla, successfully raising awareness among large audiences and allowing both businesses and the public to experience the convenience of digital payment methods.
As part of the ongoing initiative, a city-wide public engagement program will be held in Kurunegala over the two-day period. The campaign will include contributions from CBSL, Licensed Banks, Licensed Finance Companies, Licensed Operators of mobile phone-based e-money systems, and LankaPay (Pvt) Ltd, the operator of the national retail payment system.
Participating financial institutions will assist businesses in becoming LANKAQR merchants and support the public in registering for digital payment services, such as mobile payment applications and online banking facilities. Leading retail establishments in Kurunegala will also join the campaign, encouraging customers to adopt digital payment methods.
CBSL invites the public and the business community to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their understanding of digital payments. Participants will experience the convenience and security offered by these systems, with personalized guidance and assistance provided by the participating financial institutions.
