FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Export Development Board (EDB) recently conducted a training program aimed at equipping potential exporters and small to medium-scale entrepreneurs with the skills necessary to better integrate Sri Lanka’s SMEs into the global marketplace.

EDB Chairman Mangala Wijesinghe highlighted that the current direct export contribution of SMEs in Sri Lanka is less than 5 percent. This is significantly lower compared to countries such as India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, where SME export contributions exceed 25 percent. “We must change this situation,” he emphasized, underscoring the urgent need for integrating SMEs into the international market.

The training workshop, titled “Beyond Borders: Incoterms, Risk Management and Strategies for Competitiveness in International Trade,” was delivered in both Sinhala and English by Export Training Consultant Dinesh de Silva.

The sessions provided participants with strategies for establishing and negotiating orders, building buyer trust and confidence, and enhancing product knowledge. Additionally, attendees gained valuable insights into labeling and packaging, strategic pricing for competitiveness, business risk management, the practical application of Incoterms, and international payment methods.
