FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Cabinet of Sri Lanka has granted approval for a collaboration agreement with Japan aimed at facilitating the placement of skilled and semi-skilled workers in the East Asian nation.
According to Jayatissa, a new initiative titled the “Employment Program for Skill Development” will be launched by Japan, which is set to commence on April 1, 2027. This program is designed to enhance labor mobility through a more transparent and sustainable framework focused on labor welfare.
He further explained that the new agreement includes provisions aimed at offering greater protection for workers, establishing clearer career trajectories, and enabling the transfer of specific skilled laborers.
In light of a dwindling workforce due to a declining and aging population, Japan has implemented various initiatives to attract foreign labor, particularly in critical sectors that require skilled and semi-skilled personnel.
Previously, in 2017 and 2019, Sri Lanka and Japan entered into agreements that allowed Sri Lankan workers to participate in Japan’s technical internship training and skilled worker programs.
