Sri Lanka’s National Insurance Trust Fund (NITF) has announced that it will disburse a total of 6 million rupees in compensation to the families of eight prison officers who lost their lives during the recent riot at Negombo prison, according to officials.
Representatives from the statutory body confirmed that all eight individuals were enrolled in the ‘Agrahara Gold’ medical and life insurance program. Nuwan Dissanayake, the Assistant Manager of Marketing at the NITF, emphasized the organization’s commitment to expediting these claims. He mentioned that initial data has already been shared with the Department of Prisons’ headquarters.
The allocated 6 million rupees will be divided among the beneficiaries once all formal claim applications are submitted. Each of the deceased was married, and the compensation will be directed to their surviving spouses and children.
The Agrahara insurance scheme provides mandatory health and life coverage for public sector employees in Sri Lanka and is exclusively managed by the NITF, aimed at offering a safety net during unforeseen events.
Officials reiterated the NITF’s role as a vital state entity in meeting the government’s welfare responsibilities during emergencies, assuring that the claims related to the Negombo incident will be fully processed in the coming days.
