FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The services sector in Sri Lanka demonstrated growth in June 2026, as indicated by a Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) compiled by the central bank, which recorded a value of 58.5, an increase from 56.9 in the previous month.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) noted that this growth was largely fueled by advancements in the financial and professional services sectors, along with significant improvements in the insurance industry.
According to the central bank, business activities saw an uptick in June 2026, bolstered by positive developments across various sectors. The rise in new businesses was particularly evident in the financial services area.
The insurance, professional services, and personal services sectors also played a vital role in this growth trajectory.
Moreover, employment levels increased as companies sought to expand their workforce. Although backlogs of work, which had been decreasing in May, stabilized in June, the index remained above the neutral threshold.
Looking ahead, expectations for business activity in the upcoming quarter appear optimistic, driven by a projected increase in tourist arrivals, particularly due to the forthcoming Kandy Esala Perahera season. Nonetheless, ongoing global uncertainties continue to present potential challenges to this positive outlook.
