FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – A significant number of grocery stores in Sri Lanka have ceased offering one-liter cartons of fresh milk due to concerns about potential price hikes.
Over the weekend and into Monday, supermarket shelves were notably devoid of larger fresh milk packages, with only smaller containers and flavored milk products remaining available.
The typical retail price for one-liter packs of fresh milk from brands such as Ambewela and Kotmale ranges from 470 to 550 rupees. In contrast, the state-owned company Milco offers its Highland Full Cream UHT milk in 900ml packages for 380 rupees.
Reports of a shortage, or possible hoarding, are driving up market prices, prompting consumers to change their purchasing habits and seek alternatives.
