FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has determined that the 22nd Amendment to the nation’s Constitution does not necessitate a public referendum for approval and can instead be enacted with a majority vote in Parliament.
This ruling was announced by the Speaker at the commencement of the day’s parliamentary session.
The government, represented by the National People’s Power party, argues that this constitutional amendment has been designed to favor a particular individual within the judiciary. They assert, however, that the intent behind the legislative modifications is to address the backlog of cases and enhance the overall efficiency of the judicial system.
