The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) proudly organized the National Celebration for World Tourism Day 2026 on Friday, September 25, at the Taj Samudra in Colombo. This year’s global theme was “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”
The event, which ran from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., gathered esteemed representatives from various sectors including government, tourism, private enterprises, academia, and the fields of technology and innovation. The program focused on the significant impact of digital advancements and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming the tourism landscape, improving visitor experiences, and unveiling new prospects for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.
A standout feature of the celebration was the Tourism Start-Up Competition 2026, themed “AI-Driven Innovation for the Future of Tourism.” This competition received 52 submissions across two categories: Tertiary Level and Commercial Level, showcasing the ingenuity and entrepreneurial zest of Sri Lanka’s youth and tourism innovators.
After a comprehensive evaluation, 25 proposals advanced to the final round, where participants showcased their AI-based tourism solutions to a panel of experts. In the end, six winners from each category were awarded, acknowledging their innovative contributions to the future of tourism. These winners were celebrated during the event, offering them a platform to present their ideas and motivate further innovation within the industry.
The National Celebration highlighted the necessity of cultivating an innovation-driven environment that empowers tourism stakeholders to embrace new technologies. By adopting AI and digital transformation, Sri Lanka Tourism aims to enhance competitiveness, optimize destination management, improve service delivery, and create tailored visitor experiences.
The program underscored the importance of collaboration among public institutions, private companies, academic entities, and the tech community, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s dedication to developing a sustainable and digitally-empowered tourism sector.
During the event, officials emphasized that World Tourism Day 2026 represents a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka’s efforts to prepare its tourism sector for the future. Through initiatives like the Tourism Start-Up Competition, SLTDA continues to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration, ensuring Sri Lanka remains a leader in the global transformation of tourism.
