Sri Lanka imported vehicles worth 301 million USD in December 2025, bringing the total vehicle imports for the year to 2,047 million USD, according to data from the central bank.
In December, imports of commercial vehicles amounted to 60.2 million USD. Over the year 2025, commercial vehicle imports reached 440.5 million USD, while personal vehicle imports were recorded at 1,606.7 million USD.
The country had halted vehicle imports in 2020 following a decision to cut rates, which, coupled with open market operations, led to a currency crisis and ultimately a default. This situation was exacerbated by a decline in state revenues.
However, in 2025, the import of cars contributed to tax revenues exceeding the targets set. (Colombo/Feb02/2026)
