Sri Lanka’s cabinet has given its approval for a proposal aimed at modifying the nation’s Constitution as well as the Judicature Act No. 2 of 1978, which pertains to the retirement age of judges. This announcement was made by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.
According to Jayatissa, there is a recognized need to raise the current statutory retirement age for judges in order to retain the expertise and experience of seasoned legal professionals within the court system. This change is expected to enhance the quality of judicial services.
Additionally, the initiative is designed to augment the number of judges across all levels of the judiciary, including the Court of Appeal. The Legal Draftsman has been tasked with preparing the necessary amendments to both the Constitution and the Judiciary Act, No. 2 of 1978, as stated by Jayatissa.
