FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Sri Lankan cabinet has sanctioned a plan to add eight automated passenger clearance gates at Bandaranaike International Airport, as announced by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.
This decision complements a prior approval for four automated gates, raising the total count to twelve.
Jayatissa informed the media that the increase in flight operations, driven by growth in the business and tourism sectors, necessitated the expansion of automated passenger clearance facilities to a total of twelve gates.
Additionally, he mentioned that with the introduction of e-passports scheduled for 2027, there are intentions to broaden the automated clearance system, which has so far been exclusive to Sri Lankan citizens, to accommodate foreign travelers entering and exiting the country.
