FINANCIAL CHRONICLE — The cabinet of Sri Lanka has given its approval for the development of a National Intellectual Property Policy aimed at addressing existing structural and operational deficiencies within the current intellectual property system. This initiative seeks to enhance collaboration among various government agencies.
The framework that currently governs intellectual property in Sri Lanka is encapsulated in the Intellectual Property Act No. 36 of 2003. However, Minister Vijitha Herath highlighted that the government has recognized multiple issues affecting the functionality of the system.
“While various ministries and government bodies, along with the National Intellectual Property Office of Sri Lanka, contribute to the intellectual property system, there is a noticeable lack of coordination among these entities,” he stated during a press conference.
The proposed policy is designed to establish a clear strategic framework for the effective development and utilization of Sri Lanka’s intellectual property, according to the minister. It is intended to align with global best practices while also prioritizing national interests and domestic objectives. (Colombo/May 19/2026)
