Sri Lanka’s Cabinet has approved a new relief initiative offering loans at a 3 percent interest rate with a six-month grace period to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) impacted by recent disasters, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced.
He said the programme a revamped lending facility titled RE-MSME PLUS will be launched in 2026 to support the revival of around 130,000 affected entrepreneurs, providing both immediate and medium-term financial assistance.
Under the scheme, MSMEs will be eligible for three-year loans at 3 percent interest, with a maximum grace period of six months. Micro enterprises may borrow up to 250,000 rupees, while small and medium enterprises can access up to 1 million rupees.
Jayatissa added that several existing financing programmes will be merged into RE-MSME PLUS, including SMILE – Phase III, eco-friendly financing, E-FRIEND – II Phase for industrial and manufacturing investments, and the current RE-MSME loan scheme.
