Sri Lanka will get first Geogas LPG ship on Jan 05 : Minister

Sri Lanka is set to receive its first shipment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Swiss-based Geogas Trading on January 5, according to Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. Geogas Trading was awarded the contract following an international competitive bidding process.

“There will be no shortage of LPG,” Minister Herath informed parliament. “The agreements have been signed.”

Under the contract, Geogas Trading will supply 380,000 metric tonnes of LPG, with a possible variation of plus or minus 20 percent, to Litro Gas during 2026. Geogas secured the contract by offering a price that was 15 cents lower than the next best bid.

During the parliamentary session, Sri Lanka Podujana Party member Chamara Sampath Dissanayake raised concerns about a potential LPG shortage, noting that OQ Gas, an Oman-based supplier that previously provided gas to state-run Litro Gas, had lost the contract. He warned that this could lead to supply issues in the coming year.

Minister Herath reiterated that all agreements with Geogas Trading have been finalized, and the company has agreed to adhere to Sri Lanka’s standards. “There is no problem. The first ship from the new company will arrive on January 5,” he assured.

Geogas Trading SA sources its supplies from the United States.
