The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has sanctioned a relief package aimed at supporting the re-cultivation of key export crops such as tea, rubber, and coconut, following adverse weather conditions experienced in late 2025, as announced by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.
As part of this relief initiative, the government has committed to offering financial assistance to farmers, determined by the extent of damage to their lands. The maximum relief available per hectare is outlined as follows:
- Coconut: Up to 750,000 rupees per hectare
- Tea: Up to 500,000 rupees per hectare
- Rubber: Up to 400,000 rupees per hectare
The Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure put forward these compensation amounts to the Treasury after conducting an assessment of the disaster’s impact on these vital industries, according to Jayatissa.
Earlier, approval had been granted to extend relief for the re-cultivation of paddy, vegetables, and fruits. Additionally, efforts to distribute benefits have already commenced for farmers growing minor export crops, including pepper, coffee, and cardamom, which were also affected by the weather conditions.
