Sri Lankan technology companies secure $2 million in opportunities during Tokyo event.

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – Ten information and communication technology (ICT) firms from Sri Lanka successfully penetrated the Japanese market, generating over 300 leads and networking opportunities during Japan IT Week 2026, according to the Export Development Board (EDB).

According to the EDB, “The initiative has created considerable future business prospects, with an estimated value exceeding USD 2.0 million, in addition to numerous partnership and joint venture possibilities.”

The event marked Sri Lanka’s second participation in Japan IT Week Spring, held from April 6 to 10 at Tokyo Big Sight. This participation was organized with the assistance of the EDB, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan.

This initiative aims to bolster the presence of Sri Lanka’s ICT sector within the Japanese market, fostering long-term collaboration, knowledge sharing, and export growth.

At the Sri Lanka Pavilion, the participating companies presented advanced solutions that included artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) applications, software development, IT-enabled services, and various digital innovations.

Before the exhibition commenced, the delegation engaged in business briefings, site tours, seminars, and networking events. A briefing session conducted by Deloitte Tohmatsu Venture Support was followed by a visit to H1O Hamamatsucho, which offered insights into Japan’s business infrastructure and support systems for foreign enterprises.

The team also explored the Tokyo Innovation Base, providing them with an understanding of Japan’s startup ecosystem and opportunities for collaboration. Additionally, delegates participated in a seminar on effective B2B engagement strategies in Japan, led by FRONTIER Co Ltd.

The collaboration between the EDB and JICA, initiated in 2024, aims to reinforce Sri Lanka’s ICT industry presence in Japan and supports approximately 30 ICT and Business Process Management (BPM) companies, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups, through customized business coaching, market intelligence, and targeted matchmaking with Japanese industry stakeholders.
