A poignant narrative centered on a mother’s affection, recollections, and the often-overlooked moments of life has been introduced at the Pick a Book Readers’ Summit in Colombo and is now available internationally on Amazon.
Ragulan Tharmakulasingam, the author and founder of Pick a Book, has unveiled his second literary work titled The Last Cup of Tea. This short yet impactful story has resonated with readers from various age groups and is now accessible to a global audience through Amazon.
The official launch took place during the Pick a Book Readers’ Summit at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, where it attracted a gathering of literature enthusiasts and members of Sri Lanka’s reading community.
The narrative unfolds on a rainy afternoon within a serene cemetery, following the experiences of two elderly gentlemen who attend the funeral of a matriarch. Through their tender dialogue, they gradually piece together aspects of her life—highlighting the unacknowledged sacrifices she made, the daily cup of tea she prepared without prompting, and the son who always intended to reach out. The conclusion offers a subtle revelation that transforms the story into a reflection on unspoken love and the kindness we extend to others without recognition.
A tribute to mothers everywhere, the book is crafted for a single sitting and aims to leave a lasting impression. Initial readers have reported being moved to tears and feeling compelled to contact their own mothers after completing the book.
“Love isn’t lost in a sudden moment; it fades in the instances we assumed would always remain,” stated Ragulan, referencing a line from his work. “I penned this story to encourage us to appreciate those who love us in silence before the opportunity to express our gratitude disappears.”
The feedback from readers has been profoundly emotional. One reader shared, “I expected a brief read but finished it with a heavy heart.” Another remarked, “This book made me contemplate how many more cups of tea I have left with my mother. Maybe we shouldn’t postpone them for another time.” The story’s surprising conclusion has also garnered significant praise.
The Last Cup of Tea is priced at Rs. 900 in Sri Lanka and is available for purchase worldwide on Amazon.
