Tanker hit off Fujairah as gulf maritime risks escalate

FUJAIRAH – A commercial tanker has reported being struck by what was described as an “unknown projectile” while at anchor off the Emirati coast, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations.

The incident occurred late Monday approximately 23 nautical miles east of Fujairah, in the Gulf of Oman – a critical shipping zone linking global energy flows to international markets.

UKMTO said the vessel sustained minor structural damage, with no reported injuries to crew and no environmental impact. The ship remains operational, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation.

The location of the incident is significant. Fujairah serves as a key export hub that allows oil shipments to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, making it an increasingly vital node in global energy logistics amid current tensions.

Regional security concerns have intensified in recent days, with multiple maritime incidents reported across the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters. Shipping and insurance sources say risk premiums have surged as vessel operators reassess exposure in the region.

Separately, local authorities in Fujairah have acknowledged an incident involving a fire within the industrial zone linked to the port, though details regarding the cause remain limited and independently unverified.

The latest tanker strike adds to a growing list of maritime security incidents since the outbreak of hostilities in the region, underscoring the fragile state of one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
