DMK steps into unfamiliar role as Assembly politics gathers momentum
For the first time in well over a decade, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam finds itself navigating the unfamiliar territory of opposition politics. Having dominated the Treasury benches under former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, the party is now adjusting to a new political reality in which Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam occupy the seat of government.
The transition has not been without challenges. Senior DMK leaders have intensified their criticism of the Government over issues ranging from governance and land administration to the implementation of election promises. At the same time, the party has sought to portray itself as a responsible opposition prepared to hold the new administration accountable while rebuilding public confidence after its electoral defeat.
The Assembly has already witnessed sharper exchanges between Government and Opposition benches as both sides seek to define the political narrative. Ministers have defended the pace of reforms and accused the previous administration of leaving behind unresolved governance issues, while DMK legislators argue that the Government must now be judged by its performance rather than its campaign rhetoric.
The political contest is expected to intensify further during the forthcoming Budget session. Opposition members are preparing to scrutinise spending priorities, development projects and welfare commitments, while also seeking explanations for the Government’s handling of several administrative decisions taken during its opening months in office.
The Vijay administration has attempted to maintain the initiative by emphasising transparency and anticorruption measures. Ministers have indicated that an audit examining alleged financial irregularities under the previous administration will be presented during the Budget session, a move that is certain to provoke robust political exchanges inside the Assembly.
For the DMK, the challenge extends beyond parliamentary debate. The party must convince voters that it remains a credible alternative government while adapting to a political landscape that has been fundamentally altered by Vijay’s emergence. For the ruling TVK, meanwhile, effective governance will be essential if it is to maintain the public confidence that carried it to power.
The months ahead are therefore likely to define not only the future of the Vijay Government but also the direction of opposition politics in Tamil Nadu. Strong democracies depend upon both effective governments and effective oppositions. As the Assembly prepares for its next session, Tamil Nadu appears set for a period of vigorous political contest in which both will be put to the test.
