Three-wheel drivers urge uniform fares for app-based & independent services

A group of three-wheel drivers met with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Thursday to raise complaints against ride-hailing platforms, demanding uniform rates across app-based and independent services.

A representative of the group said passengers often choose app-based services because of lower fares, without being aware of how those pricing models affect drivers’ earnings.

He said the drivers have no dispute with passengers and are instead calling for a single, equal fare to apply to both app-based services and independent three-wheel drivers.

The representative said the issue could be resolved only by implementing a uniform rate, allowing passengers to choose freely between app-based services and independent drivers.

Responding to allegations that independent drivers overcharge customers, he said drivers have evidence showing that ride-hailing apps impose higher charges during peak hours, while independent meter taxi drivers charge consistent rates of 85 to 100 rupees, regardless of demand.

He questioned why such a system has not been implemented, arguing that fare-setting authority rests with the National Transport Commission, not private companies.
