Sri Lanka has recently seen the introduction of TruRout, a groundbreaking ride-hailing service that operates without charging commissions. This innovative platform adopts a subscription-based model aimed at enhancing earnings for drivers while providing passengers with clear and predictable fare structures. Unlike the traditional commission-based systems prevalent among many ride-hailing services, TruRout allows drivers to keep all their earnings from cash rides by opting for a fixed daily subscription fee that varies by vehicle type. For instance, three-wheeler drivers are charged Rs. 250 daily, while car drivers pay Rs. 350, SUV drivers Rs. 400, and those operating vans or lorries are required to pay Rs. 500. Once they subscribe, drivers can undertake an unlimited number of trips without facing any commission cuts, fostering a more sustainable income stream.
For riders, TruRout offers a straightforward pricing mechanism that removes surge pricing during busy times, holidays, and high-demand periods. Passengers are informed of the total fare before finalizing their bookings, which allows for more informed travel choices and prevents unexpected fare hikes. A standard surcharge of 10% is applied for rides taken after 10:00 p.m., ensuring fare consistency. Additionally, TruRout has launched TruMove, the first zero-commission cargo transport service in Sri Lanka, allowing registered drivers to easily switch between transporting passengers and delivering goods via the same app. This cargo service includes various categories like TruMove S, M, XL, and TruHaul, catering to both personal and business logistics needs.
To promote ongoing participation, TruRout has established referral rewards and loyalty programs for both drivers and riders. Drivers can earn incentives for bringing in new users, and they can also advance through loyalty tiers that offer subscription discounts, priority access to trips, and other operational perks. Passengers, in turn, can enjoy referral discounts, promotional deals, and ride credits that accumulate after completing qualifying trips. Safety and convenience are central to the platform’s features, which include an in-app emergency hotline, a mutual rating and feedback system, a structured process for resolving disputes, and various payment methods such as cash, bank cards, LankaQR, and the TruRout Wallet. By merging a zero-commission approach with integrated passenger and cargo services, transparent pricing, and digital advancements, TruRout aims to establish itself as a local technology leader intent on transforming Sri Lanka’s mobility landscape while enhancing value for both drivers and passengers.
