The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from June 15 to June 24.
This upcoming trip will involve a four-member team that plans to engage in discussions at the ministerial level and meet with representatives from the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
The delegation comprises Aisha Shujune Muhammad from the Maldives, who will lead the group, along with Jakub Julian Czepek from Poland, Anica Tomsic from Croatia, and Nika Kvaratskhelia from Georgia.
This marks the SPT’s second visit to Sri Lanka, following their first visit in April 2019, which took place after the country ratified the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT) in December 2017.
The Ministry confirmed that the forthcoming visit will be conducted in line with the SPT’s established mandate.
