The United States Embassy in Sri Lanka has initiated a program focused on Public Health Pest Control and Vector-Borne Disease Response, collaborating with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health and the National Dengue Control Unit. This program aims to enhance the nation’s capacity to prevent, identify, and manage dengue fever cases.
This collaborative effort involves specialists from the US Army Pacific (USARPAC) and the 18th Theater Medical Command, who will work alongside officials from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health. The goal is to exchange knowledge in areas such as preventive medicine, disease monitoring, entomology, and integrated vector management.
“Dengue remains a significant threat to families and communities throughout Sri Lanka,” stated Jayne Howell, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. “This partnership allows the United States to share its expertise in various fields, enhancing Sri Lanka’s immediate response to current outbreaks while also establishing long-term capabilities that will benefit communities for years ahead.”
Taking place in Colombo, this initiative supports the comprehensive dengue response efforts across Sri Lanka, which includes eliminating mosquito breeding sites, launching public awareness campaigns, and implementing predictive prevention strategies.
The funding for this initiative is provided by the US Department of War through the Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster, and Civic Aid (OHDACA) program.
