Vietnam Prepared to Support Sri Lanka in Agriculture and Other Vital Sectors, Says Tô Lâm

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The President of Vietnam, Tô Lâm, who also serves as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, expressed the country’s willingness to share its expertise in attracting investments and promoting sustainable agriculture during a speech to the parliament of Sri Lanka.

Tô Lâm highlighted the proactive measures Vietnam has implemented to welcome investments, stating, “Vietnam is prepared to collaborate with Sri Lanka in the areas of sustainable agriculture and climate resilience,” while emphasizing the importance of self-sufficiency. “We can achieve great things together,” he added.

In a significant step towards enhancing bilateral relations, Vietnam and Sri Lanka signed five memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering various fields including tourism, security, cultural and religious cooperation, economic collaboration, transport, and scientific advancement.

  • A MoU between the People’s Police Academy of Vietnam and the National Police Academy of Sri Lanka focusing on police training and research.
  • A MoU for scientific and technological cooperation between the ministries of science and technology from both nations.
  • An agreement between Vietnam’s Ministry of Ethnic and Religious Affairs and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.
  • A cultural cooperation MoU between Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Sri Lanka’s relevant ministry.
  • A MoU concerning information and communications between Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health and Mass Media.

Additionally, Vietnam extended a donation of 100 metric tonnes of fertilizer, which was delivered by the Vietnamese Minister of Finance, Ngo Van Tuan, and Nguyen Huu Tu, the CEO of the Vietnam National Chemical Group, to D.P. Wickramasinghe, the Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture in Sri Lanka.

President Tô Lâm is visiting Sri Lanka with a high-ranking delegation that includes senior ministers from the Vietnamese government and prominent figures from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. (Colombo/May8/2026)
