FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The no-confidence motion introduced by the opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya, in Sri Lanka’s parliament was ultimately rejected. A total of 104 out of the 225 assembly members cast their votes in favor of the government’s Energy Minister, Punya Sri Kumara Jayakody.
The no-confidence motion was based on accusations of misconduct in coal procurement and referred to indictments lodged in the Colombo High Court under the Bribery Act, concerning alleged corrupt practices in procurement at Lanka Fertilizer Company.
In the voting results, only 49 members supported the motion, while 153 legislators opposed it. (Colombo/July 11, 2019)
