In a notable advancement for Sri Lanka’s aspirations to become a frontrunner in digital and industrial innovation amidst the swift changes in the global technological arena, the Wireless Intelligence and Innovation (WIIN) Institute of Technology was officially inaugurated at TRACE Expert City.
The launch event was graced by Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, along with a host of esteemed attendees.
WIIN operates under the guiding philosophy of being “globally impactful, locally driven.” The institute is dedicated to conducting research and implementing projects that meet international standards, all while focusing on enhancing Sri Lanka’s technology landscape and contributing to the broader economic growth of the nation.
With a team comprising full-time researchers, engineers, and software developers, WIIN is set to provide innovative technological solutions across five pivotal sectors that significantly affect the country’s economy: telecommunications, energy, construction, financial technology (FinTech), and healthcare.
Beyond its research initiatives, the institute also provides industry-oriented training programs aimed at equipping professionals with advanced technological skills. These programs cover emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) and are specifically designed to address the shifting requirements of contemporary industries.
WIIN has forged partnerships with prestigious global institutions, including the 6G Flagship Programme from the University of Oulu in Finland, recognized for its leadership in European research on next-generation wireless communications; the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and IITM Pravartak, which offer international technological insights; and various engineering faculties from Sri Lankan universities.
The inauguration attracted several prominent figures, including His Excellency Santosh Jha, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka; Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Chief Advisor to the President on Digital Economy; Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy; Devika Lal, representing the High Commission of India; Dr. Shankar Raman; Professor David Koilpillai from IIT Madras; along with numerous other distinguished guests and industry professionals.
