Zydus Lifesciences and Sunshine Healthcare Unveil $20 Million Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – A collaborative effort between Sunshine Healthcare and Zydus Lifesciences has resulted in the establishment of a new joint venture named Zydus Sunshine Lifesciences Pvt Ltd, with an investment exceeding 20 million US dollars aimed at creating a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Sri Lanka.

The forthcoming facility will be situated on approximately four acres within the Board of Investment zone in Horana. The official groundbreaking ceremony took place on Friday, marking the initiation of this significant project.

The manufacturing plant is intended to produce pharmaceutical products tailored for the retail market in Sri Lanka, thereby enhancing access to high-quality medications and bolstering the resilience of the national supply chain, as outlined in a joint announcement from the companies.

“Robust local capabilities are essential for fostering resilient healthcare systems. This partnership, which merges Zydus’ international manufacturing expertise with Sunshine Holdings’ knowledge of the local market, is a pivotal development in fortifying Sri Lanka’s healthcare framework and establishing sustainable pharmaceutical resources for the future,” stated Sharvil P Patel, Managing Director of Zydus Lifesciences.

The joint venture aims to integrate Zydus’ extensive experience in pharmaceutical production with Sunshine’s established presence and distribution network in the healthcare sector.

“Our collaboration with Zydus is focused on enhancing domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing, generating skilled job opportunities, and improving access to vital medications for consumers in Sri Lanka,” commented Shyam Sathasivam, Group CEO of Sunshine Holdings.

The partnership is set to facilitate technology transfer, develop local manufacturing capabilities, and create jobs, thereby contributing to the long-term advancement of Sri Lanka’s healthcare ecosystem, as per the statement.

Zydus Lifesciences offers a wide range of capabilities that include formulations, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), medical technology, diagnostics, animal healthcare, and consumer wellness. Its global healthcare expertise and manufacturing prowess will be instrumental in the establishment and expansion of the new facility.

The project will be conducted under the supervision of the Board of Investment, with the Ministry of Health and the National Medicines Regulatory Authority playing crucial roles as stakeholders.
